The past few weeks have been a whirlwind. Where time seemed to be moving so slow before, the pace has finally picked up a bit. Words cannot begin to describe how happy I feel to be at the end of the first trimester. With 2 OB appointments and genetic screening all under my belt, I am beginning to relax a bit and take time to enjoy the fact that I am actually pregnant, with TWINS!!!

A week ago, today, James and I went to the high risk specialist for our NT Ultrasound, which allowed us a lot of time to see our two little babies while screening them for down syndrome and other chromosomal disorders. All looked great and I was relieved (James was never worried). I am officially done with genetic screening. I am not sorry I went though because (with an extremely full bladder) we were able to watch the little ones, on the ultrasound screen, for at least 30 minutes! They were moving all over the place and it was fun to watch. James, of course, provided entertainment for all as he stood about 2 inches from the monitor (hanging on the wall) and made predictions about what he was viewing. The sonographer just about lost it when James announced that he saw the opening to my cervix. Those of you, who know James well, know that this is hilarious on more than one level. First, who, besides the professionals, can ever really tell what they see? More importantly though, James doesn't even know what a cervix is. I just about lost it when the sonographer stopped, turned to look at him, and said, "What???" James confidently repeated himself. In which, the sonographer had to inform him that she was nowhere near my cervix. I almost peed myself!!! In addition to "The James Show", we were able to hear the babies' heartbeats for the first time. This had to be one of the coolest sounds I've ever heard. Baby A's heart beat 163 times/minute, while Baby B's heart beat 160 times/minute. We met with the doctor briefly and he confirmed that all looked great. An early prediction was made about the gender of our babies. The doctor provided a disclaimer in that it is really early and his prediction is about 60/40. He told me not to go shopping and not to tell anyone. I decided to honor his first request and not shop... however, I couldn't help myself and had to immediately call my family to let them know. I figured if there is any chance he is correct, I need to start preparing my mother now- for the possibility of (remember, this isn't definite yet....) two more grandsons! A later ultrasound will either confirm or change this prediction... but at this point, James and I are working on 2 boy names!
Friday, March 27
At 3:30 a.m. James and I left for the airport as my flight for Vegas, which was originally scheduled for Thursday at 6:47 p.m., was cancelled. I got to the airport around 4:15 a.m. and was in flight to Vegas by 5:40 a.m. I did my best to sleep on the plane but it was broken sleep. Needless to say, Friday was an exhausting day for me. I arrived at our hotel around 12 p.m. Vegas time and all I wanted was food. We spent all day sight seeing. While I did my best to be a trooper, there was no way I could make it through the evening festivities. I was the early bird of the night and asleep in our hotel at 8 p.m.
Saturday was Kim's 40th birthday. I lavished her with tacky "Look who's 40" garb and took every opportunity I had to tell anyone who would listen that she had just turned 40 years old. We spent the morning at the pool and enjoyed the hot sun. After finally showering and getting ready, we made our way to Caesar's Palace where we had dinner at Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill. I was able to make it a little longer this night- but had to resign back to the room and hit the sack around 10 p.m.
On Sunday morning we went to a brunch buffet. Definitely one of the highlights of my trip, we sat and ate for about 2 hours (with breaks in between of course!) Kim and I then spent a few hours at the pool while the other girls ventured out. Later on that evening, we made our way back to the strip for more sightseeing and some gambling (finally!!!). Kim and I took a gondola ride at the Venetian. A little while later, everyone else met us there for a nice Italian dinner. Afterwards, we visited a few more casinos. When we got home at 2 a.m. I was up $15 for the weekend!
Before departing on Monday, those of us who had later flights grabbed a bite to eat and then just chilled in the hotel until it was time to go to the airport. I made the mistake of getting to the airport way too early and ended up leaving Vegas down $85! Because of the time change, I didn't get back into Baltimore until 11:45 p.m. I was at home, in my bed, by 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning came quite early- but it was worth it. We had a really nice time and most importantly, I think Kim really enjoyed herself. I am officially no longer the "Crazy Sister"... I won't say anymore- as "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!!!"
Tuesday, March 31st
Besides being my mother's 40th birthday = ), Tuesday was the day that I finally told my students that I am pregnant. Their reaction was priceless, although a few of them already had their suspicions. One of my students (a male) told me that he thought I might be pregnant because he noticed one day that I had gotten blood drawn. He went home and told his mom and they started to suspect! I told him that he was very observant and would make a great husband some day!!! After making it through the school day, I had my second appointment with my OB office at 3:15 p.m. This time I saw Dr. Yates- who I absolutely love! It was a quick appointment. I was able to see the babies AGAIN. I told Dr. Yates about the gender prediction. She was pretty skeptical that the prediction was made so early- however, when looking at the babies, she did say that from what she could see, it was quite possible that one was a boy. The other baby was moving all over the place so she didn't get a good enough look. After the ultrasound, Dr. Yates said everything looked great at that was about it! My next appointment is Friday, April 24th (the day before Sally & Bryan's Wedding) at 2 p.m. It is going to be a long 3 more weeks- as I've never gone so long with out seeing my babies!!! Having said this, I do realize how lucky I am to see them so often. I've heard some women only have two or three ultrasounds a pregnancy. I've already had 5!!!
How I am feeling...
Overall, I feel great! My fatigue has definitely subsided quite a bit! It feels good to actually have energy to cook dinner when I come home. My boughts of nausea are just about completely gone. The one sure symptom I have is the growth of my belly! In addition, James would definitely agree that my mood swings have also increased within recent weeks... and as hard as I try, there isn't much I can do about this. I am just very lucky to have such a kind, patient, and understanding husband!
This weekend, I am heading to Ocean City for Sally's bachelorette party. Then on Monday, James and I leave for Texas for a week! We are really looking forward to our trip!
That's about all for today. Until next time...
